Crowns

What Is A Crown and Why Do I Need One?

A crown is a restoration that covers, or caps, a tooth to restore it to its normal shape and size. Its purpose is to strengthen or improve the appearance of a tooth.

A crown can be placed for a number of reasons:

  • For support when there isn't enough tooth remaining
  • To attach a bridge - To protect weak teeth from fracturing
  • To restore fractured teeth
  • To cover badly shaped or discolored teeth
  • To cover a dental implant

Usually two visits are involved in getting a crown. First, our doctors will prepare the tooth by removing the outer portion of your tooth to make room for the thickness of the crown. An impression is made to provide an exact model of the prepared tooth. The impression is then sent to the dental laboratory where your crown is custom made. A temporary crown will be placed while the permanent crown is being made. When the permanent crown is ready, the dentist puts it into place and makes any necessary adjustments. When you and the dentist are happy with your appearance, the crown will be cemented into place.
